Reflection,
a blessing or a curse?
Some of you may remember a photo of the Museum of Hartlepool in my Sunday Post : New Year 2013? After I’d taken that shot and was walking towards the marina, I looked across to the Mecca Bingo hall, and guess what I saw, reflected in the windows, but the Museum?
My first shot wasn’t quite so successful, because I forgot that I would be reflected in the photo too! But perversely, I quite liked it. Earlier that morning I’d been exchanging New Year greetings online, and reading the latest posts of many of my favourites. It just so happened that the topic for the month on East of Malaga’s CBBH photo challenge was Reflection.
Not just in the photographic sense, but in the sense of looking back at the year that has been. And so you see that my six words this week refer not just to me forgetting that glass reflects whatever you put in front of it. Like every other year, 2012 had its share of good memories, and bad, to reflect upon.
I thought it might be fun to bring together these two challenges, and I hope that Cate of Show My Face, and Marianne at East of Malaga will forgive me taking liberties. It is a tradition with Marianne’s to share details of two blogs that you have commented on in the past month. I think this is a lovely idea so I’m delighted to introduce you to Barbara at JustaSmidgen. If you love food and good conversation, you can’t fail to be impressed with Smidge’s blog. And keeping relations truly international, meet Sam at Two Black Dogs. Warm hearted Sam celebrated her 5th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve, so pop down to Australia and say “hi”?
Meantime Cate has celebrated her 1000th post! Congratulations, and thanks for letting me share my six words (and photos), Cate. Follow the links for an interesting Saturday, folks? Catch you next week.

Jo, that violet sunset is just gorgeous. Well done.
Thanks Georgia! I must have photos of that bridge at every conceivable time of day.
I think i would spend ALL my time hovering around that bridge Jo – your images of it are always amazing
What a clever girl you are, Jo to combine your Challenges so beautifully. I think that any Challenge, whether by words or photos, makes you THINK about the task at hand – and your results are just perfect. Well done!
It’s funny you have shared the link to Barbara’s blog, because someone else has also led me to her today – so she has just got herself a new follower. So, I’ll just HOP over to Sam’s place right now
Great entry for the CBBH Photo Challenge!
Glad you approve, Marianne. Wasn’t sure if you would, but I do know that you’ll love Smidge’s blog (and she, yours). She’s a real talent. It’s so hard knowing which to share! Do I go for someone new, just making their way? And trying to avoid all the blogs you probably know already is tricky! Maybe you need a list of blogs at the bottom of the post of those who’ve already been featured? I expect that’d be a lot of work- I don’t actually know how long you’ve been running this challenge?
Have fun with Sam, and say “hi” for me.
How could I not “approve”, Jo – I’ve done it myself and felt quite smug about it!
The thing about sharing links is that even though sometimes they are familiar to some of us, there might be many others reading to whom they are brand new
The first CBBH monthly Photo Challenge was August, last year.
I forget about my shadow when photographing things, I love the reflections.
Thanks, Viv. Yes, us women are supposed to be good at multi-tasking but I’m always too busy aiming the camera to be able to keep an eye on me!
Accidental photos are often the best. The Hub took one of a plane taking off and when it was developed (we’re talking the Eighties here) he saw there was another plane in the sky, above and behind it.
And claimed credit for a truly great shot, no doubt?
Super – and great to see two new blogs to visit …
You’ll enjoy them, Meredith. Sometimes hard to keep track of who knows who!
love the reflection photos – especially the bridge!
Thanks, Robyn. I’m going back there soon. Can’t wait!
lovely Tavira shot Jo!
Happy New Year to you – hope 2013 gives you some wonderful memories and moments ready for you to reflect on in 2014 xx
I’ll drink to that, Aly! Just booked a last minute flight so am over on 26th January for a fleeting week before the “big wedding”. Got to remind myself what that bridge looks like.
we’ll try and make sure the sun is shining for you then xx
An interesting post, I enjoyed it. Happy SWS.
Thanks, Lisa. Not sure if I was saving time doing 2 in 1, but I’ve meant to do Marianne’s challenge for a while, and it just seemed too good an opportunity to miss.
I like the reflections pics and the tie in with looking back on the year
Thanks, Fi. It’s a sort of a mix and match post!
Thoughtful stuff – I like it!
Not sure that thinking is good for me, Andrew, but just once in a while …
Those are some awesome reflection pictures. A great post all around.
Glad you liked them, Wayne. Running around trying to catch up right now!
Wonderful photos!
I think reflection is a blessing.
Happy weekend!
Thanks a lot, Dana. Me too! Bit busy today, but I’m getting there …
Wonderful reflections, Jo. Wow, 1000 posts! I must pop over and pay a visit to Cate. Have a great weekend.
Thanks, Ad. I think I’m on 147. Puny, huh?
I love reflection shots. Hubby takes the pictures so he gets in some when he takes a reflection shot.
Me and mine used to fight for control of the camera, Judy, so we’ve agreed to go our own ways now.
Jo, all your photo’s are beautiful! I can see why that bridge is your favorite it is stunning and that picture is amazing!
Bless you, Tonya. It’s one of those sights that always lifts my heart. Thank you!
Ah, but I adore and love reflections and all the many phases of reflections! Great photos too!
Hi Karen! Yes, it’s good to reflect. Thank you!
Hello.. just stopping in out of the cold and was surprised to see your kind words.. thanks so much! I love how you began with glass reflections.. I didn’t even think of the other meaning of reflection so it was a great shift in thought. I love that you’re reflected in the image.. wouldn’t it be cool to see a whole series of those:) Maybe every blogger could take one in a window of some significance to them.. Anyway.. I hope you’re having a glorious day!! xx
Thanks, honey. Expect a few visits from friends. A while ago I took part in something called “A Day” and I (deliberately) took a photo of me in my bedroom mirror as part of the series I took that day. I’ve just remembered it, and I could have used it here! Tarnation….
This was a most enjoyable post (I can see why you love that river and bridge – it is a lovely setting). I also liked the photo of the reflection with yourself in it, it ‘put you in the picture’ and I thought that was rather clever!
Thanks, Madoqua. Tavira is beautiful, no doubt about it. I’m back there in a few weeks, so expect more photos of the bridge.
beautiful!
Thank you. You’re kind, Hilary.
I like the sunset photo best – but the reflection ones are excellent too.
Thanks, Elaine. The sunset one is my soul.
As always, J, you rock. Beautiful!!
–Ron. (The Missing Link)
Can’t be losing friends, Ron. They’re too precious in this life.
Great interior and exterior reflections, Jo! Nothing is perfect in life, but it seems there is usually something positive that comes out of the negative.
I’m smiling and groaning at the same time, Cath, and I’m absolutely not going to look in the mirror. Hope you’re enjoying your family time.
Thanks Jo! So far, so good.
I suppose it depends what you are reflecting upon and why…as always *love* the photos! Happy 6WS!
Thanks, Lizzie. How was last year for the business? Hope this one’s better.
I love stopping by your blog and seeing the beautiful photos you shoot. happy sws
tick tock Janice
Thank you so much, Janice. Not sure which is the bigger obsession- blogging or photography!
A wonderful six word Saturday, the sunset in Tavira looks magnificent and I can see why it is your favourite bridge, I love the reflections of the lights and the sunset on the water.
Thank you for the shout out and the lovely comment, from one warm hearted person to another
It’s a much nicer way to do it than the awards system, I think, and much less stressful. Going back to Tavira for just a week on 26th January, then it’s the wedding. Pure excitement!
Great post. In the first photo are there sailing ships or one tall ship? Very interesting.
Hartlepool has a strong maritime heritage, and the masts you can see are the HMS Trincomalee, Britain’s oldest fighting ship. She was built in India in 1817, and was restored locally over a ten year period. She now forms part of the Museum of Hartlepool, and is a real beauty. Thanks for your interest.
I like those reflections.
I think there is something rather evocative in older buildings reflected in a modern build, it sort of links them.
Yes, particularly a bingo hall, Vicky!
It’s hard to see that second shot as a reflection, it’s so clear it looks as if it’s a metal grid with thin air going through the spaces and you on the other side from the camera taking the shot. Nice interpretation!
Thanks, Lorna. I do like it as a composition, I have to say.
You captured some wonderful reflections! I especially like the reflection from the bridge… Great pictures!
Ahh, my favourite place, Meg. Back there in a few weeks. Thank you.
I love the reflected images, Jo! Abso brilliant!
Many thanks! Everyone has a few nice reflections, don’t they?
I have been marveling at the ones with 400 odd posts, but 1000??? Wow! I am just a wee bit ahead of you
Hope the year ahead has only good things in store for you Jo. Take care.
Thanks, honey. And you! I’m not even going to ask about your travel plans for the year till I’ve got my jealousy gene under control!
I love that bridge photo. Reflections in the water can be very beautiful.
Especially on a warm summer’s evening, with the swifts flying low over the water. Thank you!
